Transfer from Barcelona Airport to Pas de la Casa: route, journey time and vehicles
Pas de la Casa is at the eastern tip of Andorra, above 2,000 m, on the French side of the Envalira pass. There are two ways to get there from El Prat. The shorter one, about 200 km, climbs the C-16 past Manresa and Berga, goes through the Cadí tunnel and continues to Puigcerdà. There it crosses into France at Bourg-Madame, follows the valley up to the Puymorens tunnel and finishes on the N22 into Pas de la Casa. Without traffic it takes about 2 hours 50 minutes. The other route runs via La Seu d'Urgell and right across Andorra through Andorra la Vella, Encamp, Canillo and Soldeu, then over the Envalira pass or through its tunnel. It is about 250 km and usually slower because of traffic in Andorra la Vella. Tolls on the C-16, the Cadí tunnel and the Puymorens or Envalira tunnel are included in your price.
The Puymorens pass is at 1,915 m and the Envalira pass at 2,408 m; both have a toll tunnel underneath that avoids the highest stretch. In winter a heavy snowfall can still close a road or make snow chains compulsory. On the day, we check road conditions with the Catalan traffic service, mobilitat.ad for Andorra and French traffic information, then choose the route. If the departure time needs to move, we let you know by phone or WhatsApp.
On the Puigcerdà route you cross two borders: Spain to France, inside the Schengen area, and France to Andorra at Pas de la Casa. Andorra is outside both the European Union and Schengen, with customs posts at Pas de la Casa and at La Farga de Moles on the Spanish side. Every passenger, children included, needs a valid passport or national ID card. Pas de la Casa has many shops, and on the way out customs officers may check the tobacco, alcohol and perfume you carry. Check the allowances before you buy and keep your receipts.
Pas de la Casa belongs to Grandvalira. It shares the ski area with Grau Roig, Soldeu, El Tarter, Canillo and Encamp. Check the dates and open sectors for your trip on grandvalira.com. Snow conditions can change the calendar. The village is compact and most accommodation sits near the lifts. Your chauffeur drops you at your accommodation or the nearest accessible point and helps unload your equipment.
Saturdays in the season, when many apartments change over, plus Spanish bank holidays and French school holidays, put more traffic on the roads to the Pyrenees. A morning arrival gets you up the mountain in daylight. For the return, allow nearly three hours to El Prat, plus your airline's check-in time and a margin in case it snows; we suggest a pick-up time.
Long ski bags do not always fit in a saloon's boot, so with skis the safe choice is the 7-seat V-Class. When you ask for a quote, tell us how many ski or board bags you are bringing and we will confirm whether they fit or whether a minibus makes more sense. Do you drive through France or through Andorra?
Usually via Puigcerdà and the Puymorens tunnel, the shorter route. If snow causes problems on the French side, we go through La Seu d'Urgell and Andorra and climb through the Envalira tunnel. The fixed price is the same whichever route we take.
What documents do we need?
A valid passport or national ID card for every passenger, children included. Andorra is outside Schengen, so if you need a visa for Europe, make sure it allows multiple entries: coming back into France or Spain counts as a new entry. If a child travels without their parents, check which authorisation they need.
What happens if it snows on the day of the transfer?
We check road conditions before leaving and pick the safest open route. If the authorities close a pass or make chains compulsory, the drive may take longer or the departure time may need to change. We tell you as soon as we know.
Can you take us to Grau Roig or Soldeu instead of Pas de la Casa?
Yes. Grau Roig is a few minutes away on the other side of the Envalira tunnel, and Soldeu and El Tarter are further down the valley. Give us the exact address and we choose the route that reaches it best.
