Transfer from Barcelona to Carcassonne: route, journey time and vehicles

Carcassonne is about 300 km from central Barcelona. Your chauffeur leaves on the Ronda Litoral and the C-33, follows the AP-7 north to La Jonquera and enters France at Le Perthus. The route continues on the A9 to Narbonne, then turns west on the A61 towards Toulouse. Without traffic the drive takes about 3 hours. In summer and on French bank holiday weekends the A9 between the border and Narbonne can be slow, and we allow for that when we suggest a departure time.

The AP-7 in Catalonia no longer has tolls, while the French A9 and A61 do; those tolls are included in your fixed price. The border lies inside the Schengen area, but French police can run checks at Le Perthus, so every passenger, children included, should carry a valid passport or national ID card. Non-EU nationals should also bring a visa or residence permit if they need one.

La Cité has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Its double ring of walls runs for almost 3 km with 52 towers and encloses the Château Comtal and the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire. Traffic inside the walls is restricted, so your chauffeur drops you beside the Porte Narbonnaise, the main gate on the east side, and collects you there at the time you agree. If your hotel is inside La Cité, ask it how guests' cars get in. Across the River Aude, over the Pont Vieux, the lower town (Bastide Saint-Louis) has most of the shops and restaurants.

A same-day return means about 6 hours on the road. With an hourly chauffeur you leave Barcelona early, spend three or four hours in La Cité and drive back in the afternoon, with no parking to find. If you stay overnight, you can add the Cathar castles of Peyrepertuse or Quéribus in the Corbières hills, or carry on to Toulouse, about 90 km further along the A61.

La Cité is at its busiest in July and August, and early morning is the quietest time to walk the ramparts. On the night of 14 July the Embrasement de la Cité fireworks fill the town, so book your room and transfer well ahead if you want to see them. In winter there are fewer visitors and the drive tends to be smoother.

A couple or a small family fits well in a Mercedes E-Class with 3 suitcases. The S-Class makes a long day with six hours in the car more comfortable. The V-Class seats up to 7. For groups of friends, school trips or company outings, we provide a minibus with 8 to 19 seats or a coach with 20 to 55.

FAQ

Transfer to Carcassonne: frequently asked questions

Can we visit Carcassonne and return to Barcelona the same day?

Yes, with the hourly chauffeur service. Allow about 3 hours each way plus the time you want in La Cité. We suggest a departure time that gets you there early, when there are fewer visitors.

Where does the car drop us at La Cité?

Beside the Porte Narbonnaise, the main gate, because traffic inside the walls is restricted. If your hotel is inside La Cité, ask the hotel about car access and we follow its instructions.

Do I need a passport to travel from Barcelona to Carcassonne?

EU citizens can travel with a valid national ID card; everyone else needs a passport and, where required, a visa. French police can ask for documents at Le Perthus, children's included.

Where will my chauffeur meet me?

At the pick-up point agreed when you book. Your chauffeur lets you know when the car arrives. We include 15 minutes of courtesy waiting from the agreed pick-up time. We charge for extra waiting.

How much does the transfer from Barcelona to Carcassonne cost?

It depends on the vehicle, the date and the time. We send you a fixed price before the trip, with tolls and luggage included, and a quote needs no prepayment. You can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before pick-up.

How long does the transfer from Barcelona to Carcassonne take?

The journey covers about 300 km and takes roughly 3 h without traffic. Rush hour and high season add time, so allow for this when you choose your pick-up time if you have a flight or sailing to catch.

Can I request child seats?

Yes. We provide baby seats, child seats and boosters at no extra cost. Give us each child's age, height and weight when you book.
