Transfer from Barcelona to Montpellier: route, journey time and vehicles
Montpellier is about 340 km from Barcelona, almost all of it on motorways. Your chauffeur takes the Ronda Litoral and the C-33, follows the AP-7 to La Jonquera and then, in France, the A9 past Perpignan, Narbonne and Béziers to Montpellier. Without traffic the drive takes about 3 h 30 min. The AP-7 has been toll-free in Catalonia since 2021; the A9 is tolled from the Le Boulou barrier onwards, and the toll is included in the fixed price we confirm. On a trip this long you can ask for a break at a service area or a longer stop for lunch.
French police can check documents at Le Perthus. Bring valid travel documents for every passenger, including children. Check entry requirements for your nationality before travel. If you need a visa or residence permit, check its validity for entry to France.
Direct trains from Sants to Montpellier take about 3 hours, compared with about 3 h 30 min by car. They arrive at Montpellier Saint-Roch, beside the centre, or Montpellier Sud de France, on the outskirts. Check your arrival station when you book on renfe.com or sncf-connect.com. The train suits a solo traveller with little luggage. A chauffeur helps groups and passengers leaving El Prat airport or the cruise port. We also drive to Port Marianne, the coast or nearby villages, to your address or the nearest accessible point.
The historic centre, known as the Écusson, is largely pedestrianised. Place de la Comédie and the Opéra sit at one end, and the Promenade du Peyrou, with its triumphal arch and château d'eau, at the other. Your chauffeur drops you at the access point closest to your hotel and helps with the cases. The Corum, the city's congress centre and opera house, stands by the Esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle, a few minutes' walk from the Comédie. The beaches at Palavas-les-Flots are about 17 km away by road and La Grande-Motte about 25 km. Montpellier-Méditerranée airport lies south-east of the city.
On the way you can stop in Narbonne, or in Béziers, where the nine Fonseranes locks lift the Canal du Midi, or detour to Sète before you arrive. Tell us your stops when you ask for a quote. In summer, Saturdays in July and August above all, the A9 is very busy; Bison Futé, France's official traffic service, publishes forecasts on bison-fute.gouv.fr. For three and a half hours on the road, the S-Class is the most comfortable car if you want to sleep or work. The E-Class takes 3 passengers with 3 suitcases, the V-Class up to 7 people with luggage, and the minibus 8 to 19, for example a team heading to a congress at the Corum.
