Transfer from Barcelona to Montserrat: route, journey time and vehicles

The monastery is about 60 km from central Barcelona. We leave through the Vallvidrera tunnels (C-16) or on the A-2, depending on your pick-up point, take the C-55 towards Manresa and, at Monistrol de Montserrat, start up the BP-1121, a winding mountain road that ends beside the monastery complex. Without traffic it is around an hour door to door.

The alternative is the FGC train from Plaça d'Espanya to Monistrol, for the rack railway, or to the Aeri station, for the cable car. It works well, but it runs to a timetable and involves at least one change. By car you leave when it suits you, and older travellers or anyone with a pushchair avoid platforms and waiting. If you arrive by cruise ship, we collect you at the terminal; Montserrat fits into a port day, but the return time to the ship needs careful planning, and we agree it with you before setting off.

Benedictine monks have lived at Montserrat since the 11th century, and the monastery is still active, with services through the day. The basilica holds the Black Madonna, La Moreneta, reached by a separate queue that can be long at weekends. The Museu de Montserrat has paintings by El Greco, Caravaggio, Monet, Picasso and Dalí. The Sant Joan funicular climbs to the upper trails, including the path to Sant Jeroni, the mountain's 1,236 m summit, while the Santa Cova funicular drops towards the cave chapel where, according to tradition, the statue was found. The Escolania boys' choir sings the Salve and Virolai at 1 pm, Monday to Friday; you need to book in advance on escolania.cat, and there are days when the choir does not sing.

With an hourly chauffeur, your driver waits and you decide how long to stay. Two or three hours covers the basilica and a short walk; add the museum and a funicular ride and you need half a day. You can carry on to a cava winery in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, about 45 minutes away, and be back in Barcelona in the afternoon. Weekdays and early mornings are much quieter than Saturdays and Sundays. Your chauffeur drives and waits but is not a tour guide; for a guided visit of the monastery, see the options on montserratvisita.com.

The E-Class suits up to three people, and the V-Class takes families or groups of up to seven. For company outings, school trips or cruise groups, the minibus (8 to 19 seats) and the coach (20 to 55) also drive up the BP-1121 to the monastery car park. It is usually cooler at the top than in Barcelona, so bring an extra layer even on a warm day in the city.

FAQ

Transfer to Montserrat: frequently asked questions

Will the driver wait while we visit Montserrat?

Yes, if you book it as an hourly service or as a return trip with waiting time. Tell us how long you want to stay and we include it in the quote; if you end up needing longer, the extra time is charged separately.

How can we hear the Escolania choir?

The Escolania sings the Salve and Virolai at 1 pm from Monday to Friday, and at Sunday's conventual Mass. You need to book on escolania.cat, which also shows the calendar of days without singing. Tell us your slot and we set the pick-up time so you arrive with time to spare.

Can we combine Montserrat with a Penedès winery?

Yes. Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, the home of cava, is about 45 minutes from Montserrat. Book the winery visit in advance and send us the times; we plan the day around them and drive you back to Barcelona when you finish.

Can you organise the trip for a large group?

Yes. The minibus seats 8 to 19 people and the coach 20 to 55, and both drive up to the monastery car park. For larger groups we coordinate several vehicles with the same departure and return times.

Where will my chauffeur meet me?

At the pick-up point agreed when you book. Your chauffeur lets you know when the car arrives. We include 15 minutes of courtesy waiting from the agreed pick-up time. We charge for extra waiting.

How much does the transfer from Barcelona to Montserrat cost?

It depends on the vehicle, the date and the time. We send you a fixed price before the trip, with tolls and luggage included, and a quote needs no prepayment. You can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before pick-up.

How long does the transfer from Barcelona to Montserrat take?

The journey covers about 60 km and takes roughly 1 h without traffic. Rush hour and high season add time, so allow for this when you choose your pick-up time if you have a flight or sailing to catch.
