Transfer from Barcelona to Madrid: route, journey time and vehicles

Madrid is about 620 km from Barcelona. Your chauffeur leaves on the B-23, takes the AP-7 south and joins the AP-2 near El Vendrell. The AP-2 crosses inland past Montblanc and Lleida to Zaragoza, where the A-2 takes over through Calatayud, Medinaceli and Guadalajara to Madrid. Without stops the drive takes about six and a quarter hours; with a lunch break, allow around seven hours door to door. The AP-2 and this stretch of the AP-7 have been toll-free since September 2021, and the A-2 is a toll-free motorway.

By train, AVE, Iryo and Ouigo link Barcelona-Sants and Madrid in about 2 h 30 min on direct services. For one person with one suitcase going centre to centre, the train is usually faster and cheaper. A private driver makes sense in other cases: a group of five to seven travelling together in a V-Class; luggage that will not fit on a train, such as trade-fair stock, instruments or film kit; a destination far from the station, such as IFEMA or a house in the hills north of Madrid; a departure time with no trains; or the chance to work and take calls in private for the whole journey.

A drive this long has room for one or two stops. Poblet Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a few minutes off the AP-2 near Montblanc. Zaragoza sits halfway, so you can have lunch near the Plaza del Pilar before carrying on. Further on, Medinaceli keeps a Roman arch on a hilltop beside the A-2, and from Calatayud a short detour leads to the Monasterio de Piedra. When you ask for a quote, tell us which stops you want and for how long, and we build them into the fixed price.

In winter the A-2 climbs above 1,000 m between Medinaceli and Alcolea del Pinar, where snow and ice are possible. Before setting off we check road conditions with the DGT, Spain's traffic authority, and suggest another time if needed. EU driving-time rules require a 45-minute break after 4 h 30 min at the wheel in vehicles with more than nine seats including the driver. In a minibus or coach the trip therefore always includes a stop, and we place it where it suits you, often in Zaragoza.

In Madrid we drop you at the door: hotels on the Paseo de la Castellana, in the Salamanca district or on the Gran Vía, offices in AZCA or the Cuatro Torres business area, the IFEMA trade fair grounds or Terminal 4 at Barajas nearby. IFEMA and the airport lie on the east side of the city, close to the A-2 we arrive on. The centre has low-emission zones with restricted access; if your hotel is inside one, your chauffeur takes you to the door when access is allowed, or to the nearest permitted point.

For one to three executives, the Mercedes E-Class or S-Class, with room in the back to work. The V-Class seats seven passengers with seven suitcases. For teams or delegations heading to a trade fair, a minibus with 8 to 19 seats or a coach with 20 to 55. We also drive the return leg, from Madrid to Barcelona or to El Prat Airport.

FAQ

Transfer to Madrid: frequently asked questions

Is a private driver to Madrid worth it compared with the high-speed train?

If you are travelling alone with little luggage, the train is faster. A private driver pays off for groups of four or more, for lots of luggage or equipment, for destinations far from the station such as IFEMA, or when you want to leave at a set time and stop on the way.

How many stops are there on the drive to Madrid?

As many as you need. In the E-Class, S-Class and V-Class we stop whenever you ask. In a minibus or coach the driver must rest for 45 minutes after 4 h 30 min at the wheel, so we plan that stop from the start, often in Zaragoza.

Are there tolls between Barcelona and Madrid?

Not on the usual route via the AP-7, AP-2 and A-2: tolls on the AP-2 and this stretch of the AP-7 ended in September 2021. If traffic sends us on a tolled route, the toll is included in the fixed price.

Can you drop us at IFEMA or Madrid-Barajas Airport?

Yes. Both lie on the east side of Madrid near the A-2, so there is no need to cross the centre. If you have a flight from Barajas, give us the time and we set the Barcelona departure with a margin for traffic into Madrid.

Where will my chauffeur meet me?

At the pick-up point agreed when you book. Your chauffeur lets you know when the car arrives. We include 15 minutes of courtesy waiting from the agreed pick-up time. We charge for extra waiting.

How much does the transfer from Barcelona to Madrid cost?

It depends on the vehicle, the date and the time. We send you a fixed price before the trip, with tolls and luggage included, and a quote needs no prepayment. You can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before pick-up.

How long does the transfer from Barcelona to Madrid take?

The journey covers about 620 km and takes roughly 6 h 15 min without traffic. Rush hour and high season add time, so allow for this when you choose your pick-up time if you have a flight or sailing to catch.
