Transfer from Barcelona Airport to Tossa de Mar: route, journey time and vehicles
Tossa de Mar is about 105 km from El Prat. Your chauffeur crosses Barcelona on the Ronda Litoral, follows the C-32 up the Maresme coast to Blanes and carries on to Lloret de Mar. The final 12 km, on the GI-682, wind along the cliffs one bend after another. Without traffic the journey takes about 80 minutes, a little more in July and August.
A second route runs inland: the AP-7 to Maçanet, the C-35 to Llagostera, then the GI-681 down to Tossa. Your chauffeur picks between them according to the day's traffic. If anyone in your party suffers from car sickness, tell us when you book; your chauffeur will take the winding stretch gently and stop if you need a break.
The Vila Vella is the only walled medieval town still standing on the Catalan coast. Its walls, built between the 12th and 14th centuries, keep their towers above Platja Gran, among them the Torre d'en Joanàs and the Torre de les Hores. A statue of Ava Gardner recalls the filming of Pandora and the Flying Dutchman, released in 1951.
North of Platja Gran, Mar Menuda beach mixes sand with submerged rocks and suits snorkelling. The coastal path leads to coves such as Cala Giverola, about 5 km to the north. On the far side of the Vila Vella, below the Torre des Codolar, the small Codolar cove sits sheltered between the rocks. Much of the accommodation in Tossa is small hotels and holiday flats spread through the centre and the hillside estates. Cars cannot enter the Vila Vella or several streets in the centre. If your hotel is on one of them, your chauffeur stops at the nearest point and helps you unload. In summer, book your return trip early to secure the departure time you want.
For the return to El Prat, allow for the 12 km of bends to Lloret and Sunday traffic on the C-32 in summer; we set the hotel pick-up with a margin over your flight. During your stay you can book a chauffeur by the hour for Girona, about 40 minutes away, to walk the old Jewish quarter and the cathedral, or to follow the coast north towards Sant Feliu de Guíxols.
For a couple, the Mercedes E-Class works well, or the S-Class if you want the smoothest ride through the bends. Families and groups of up to 7 travel in the V-Class, which takes 7 cases. If you find a flight to Girona instead, Tossa is about 45 km from that airport, roughly 45 minutes.
