You can get from Barcelona-El Prat Airport to the city centre by Aerobús, by the R2 Nord train, by metro line L9 Sud, by city bus 46 or with a pre-booked private chauffeur. The Aerobús reaches Plaça de Catalunya in 30 to 35 minutes and runs 24 hours a day; the train is faster to Sants station but only leaves from Terminal 2. The best choice depends on your terminal, your landing time, how much luggage you have and where you are staying.

First, find out whether you land at T1 or T2
Barcelona's two terminals are separate buildings, and each transport option leaves from a different place. Your terminal depends on the airline and is printed on your boarding pass; Aena, the airport operator, also lists it on its website.
If you end up at the wrong one, Aena runs a free shuttle bus between terminals 24 hours a day. It leaves every 5 minutes from 08:00 to 20:00, every 7 minutes early in the morning and in the evening, and every 10 minutes between midnight and 05:00. The ride from T1 to T2 takes about 10 minutes. Our guide to Barcelona Airport T1 and T2 covers which airlines use each terminal and how the arrivals halls are laid out.
Aerobús: the direct bus to Plaça de Catalunya
The Aerobús is the airport express bus. Line A1 serves T1, stopping on the arrivals road (floor 0), and line A2 serves T2B and T2C. Both follow the same route through the city: Plaça d'Espanya, Gran Via at Comte Borrell, Plaça de la Universitat and Plaça de Catalunya. The operator gives a journey time of 30 to 35 minutes.
The service runs around the clock. A1 buses leave every 5 minutes between 07:15 and 22:30, every 10 minutes early and late, and every 20 minutes overnight. A2 buses leave every 10 minutes from 05:35 to 23:00 and every 20 minutes through the night.
Before you board:
- Your ticket covers the luggage from your flight, which goes in a rack inside the bus.
- Skis, bikes and surfboards travel only if there is room, with a limit of three per bus and one per passenger.
- The Aerobús does not stop at Sants station or at Estació del Nord coach station.
- Children under 4 travel free.
It works best if you travel light and are staying near Plaça de Catalunya, La Rambla or the lower Eixample.
R2 Nord train: fastest to Sants, from T2 only
Aeroport station on the Rodalies commuter network sits next to T2. The R2 Nord line stops at El Prat de Llobregat, Bellvitge, Barcelona-Sants and Passeig de Gràcia, then carries on towards Granollers and Maçanet-Massanes. On Renfe's timetable for a weekday in October 2026, the first train leaves at 05:40 and the last at 23:38, with one every 30 minutes. It reaches Sants in 20 minutes and Passeig de Gràcia in 27.
From T1 you need the shuttle first, and once you add the wait and the half-hourly gap between trains, the advantage disappears. The train makes most sense if you are catching a high-speed AVE or long-distance train at Sants, or staying near Passeig de Gràcia. For the opposite journey with luggage, we run a private transfer from Barcelona Sants to the airport.
Metro L9 Sud: serves both terminals, not the centre
L9 Sud has a station at T1 and at T2 and runs every 7 minutes. TMB, the city transport operator, says the full run to Zona Universitària takes 32 minutes. For Plaça de Catalunya, the Sagrada Família or El Born, change at Torrassa (L1), Collblanc (L5) or Zona Universitària (L3).
- The single ticket and the T-casual 10-journey card are not valid at the airport stations. Use TMB's Airport ticket, Hola Barcelona Travel Card, or another valid pass, such as T-usual or T-jove. If you arrive with the wrong ticket, you have to buy an Airport ticket at the station to get out.
- L9 Sud stops at Fira and Europa-Fira, next to the Fira Gran Via exhibition centre. If you are heading to a congress with hand luggage only, it is the most direct link to the venue.
Bus 46 and night buses
Bus 46 links T1 and T2 with Plaça d'Espanya, running through El Prat de Llobregat and L'Hospitalet. It makes more stops than the Aerobús. At night, lines N17 and N18 run from T1 to Plaça de Catalunya (Ronda de la Universitat), and the N18 also calls at T2 on the way into Barcelona. Since the Aerobús also runs all night, these lines are mainly useful for stops in El Prat or L'Hospitalet.
Private chauffeur: from the arrivals hall to your door
Your chauffeur chooses the route for your terminal and destination on a private airport transfer. The usual route follows the C-31 and Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes through L'Hospitalet. Plaça de Catalunya is about 17 km from T1 and 14 km from T2. Without traffic, the drive to an Eixample hotel takes around 25 minutes. For Barceloneta or the Olympic Village, your chauffeur usually chooses the Ronda Litoral ring road. For Sarrià or Pedralbes, your chauffeur usually takes the Ronda de Dalt.
Booking our Barcelona airport transfer service works like this:
- You book ahead by WhatsApp, phone, email or the booking form. We are a licensed VTC operator, the Spanish category for private hire with a driver, so every journey is pre-booked.
- We confirm a fixed price before the trip, with tolls and luggage included. You do not pay anything up front to get a quote.
- We track your flight. Your chauffeur waits in your terminal's arrivals hall with a name sign, and you get 1 h 15 min of free waiting from the moment the plane lands.
- Child seats are free if you request them when booking.
- You can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before pick-up.
Many streets in the Gothic Quarter, El Born and much of the Raval are pedestrianised. If you are staying on one, your chauffeur stops at the nearest street a car can reach and helps you with the cases.
When a pre-booked chauffeur makes sense
If you travel light and your hotel is close to a stop, public transport does the job. A chauffeur is the better fit in these cases:
- There are four or more of you with suitcases. The Mercedes V-Class takes up to 7 passengers with 7 cases. We have minibuses for groups of 8 to 19.
- You are travelling with young children and need child seats.
- You land after the last train. The Aerobús runs overnight, but you still need to reach your hotel from its stop. Confirm availability before you book a chauffeur.
- You are staying away from the stops, in Pedralbes, Sarrià, Sant Gervasi, Diagonal Mar or Poblenou.
- You have a meeting or a trade fair straight after landing.
- You are meeting a senior executive or a guest. For those arrivals we offer a VIP airport transfer.
For a quote, book your transfer with your flight number and destination address.
FAQ
What is the fastest way from Barcelona Airport to the city centre?
It depends on where you are going. From T2 to Sants, the R2 Nord train takes 20 minutes, though it only runs every half hour. To a hotel in the Eixample, a car takes about 25 minutes without traffic from either terminal.
Is there public transport from the airport at night?
Yes. The Aerobús runs 24 hours, with a bus every 20 minutes overnight, and night buses N17 and N18 go to Plaça de Catalunya. The last R2 Nord train leaves at 23:38 on weekdays, and the metro follows TMB's general hours.
Which ticket do I need for the metro from the airport?
Use TMB's Airport ticket, Hola Barcelona Travel Card, or another valid pass, such as T-usual or T-jove. The single ticket and the T-casual are not valid at Aeroport T1 and Aeroport T2 stations.
Where will the chauffeur wait if my flight is late?
In your terminal's arrivals hall, holding a sign with your name. We track the flight and count the 1 h 15 min of free waiting from the actual landing time.
